Support for Acute and Chronic Sports Injuries
There are two main types of sports injuries that an athlete or active person may sustain. The good news is that, at Melbourne Physiotherapy, Pilates, and Fitness Group, we treat both types.
Acute Sports Injuries
Acute or traumatic injuries are ones that occur suddenly while playing or engaging in sports. They include injuries like muscle tears, ligament sprains, dislocations, and even fractured bones.
Chronic Injuries and Pain
Chronic or gradual onset injuries are ones that develop over time and may be due to extrinsic factors (such as sudden changes in training volume or changing equipment). They include injuries like runners or jumpers knee, tendinopathy, tennis elbow, and sciatic pain.
Sports Injury Rehabilitation: What to Expect
1. Assessment
You will meet with one of our Physiotherapists for an initial consultation. They will take down a detailed history of your injury or condition and may request further investigations to determine the most suitable course of management.
2. Diagnosis
We are committed to providing our patients with an accurate diagnosis. We treat anything in your body that may have contributed to your injury or could influence your recovery to get you back on your feet in no time.
3. Tailored Treatment
Based on your history, symptoms, and goals, your Physiotherapist will craft a personalised treatment plan that will optimise your health and see you back on the field as quickly as possible. Treatment may involve a number of aspects.
Melbourne Physiotherapy, Pilates, and Fitness Group can also communicate with your coach or trainer regarding your progress and what they can do to assist with your rehabilitation and return to the field.
Sports Injury Treatments
We may use a number of treatment methods to address your sports injury and aid in your rehabilitation. Your Physiotherapist will devise a tailored treatment plan that takes into account your specific injury or condition, your medical history, and your fitness goals. Here at MPPFG, we aim to offer a holistic and comprehensive approach to sports injury management, striving to not only treat your injury but also improve your strength and performance.
Physiotherapy
The exact treatments used will vary depending on your condition but may involve joint mobilisation, massage, remedial and sports-specific exercise programs, electrotherapy and Shockwave Therapy.
Clinical Exercise
Clinical Exercise encompasses all modes and styles of therapeutic exercise, of which Clinical Pilates is one major component. It combines therapeutic and remedial exercises to treat your specific injury. Small group classes (4 participants max) are held at our Fitzroy Street location.
Podiatry
When an injury has occurred to the foot or ankle region (such as sprains, shin splints, and Achilles tendinopathy), a podiatrist will be the best course of action for getting you back on your feet. Prescription of orthotics is a common strategy to treat your condition. Our services also provide general care for common foot diagnoses such as Diabetes and corns.
Exercise Physiology
As each person and body is unique, the treatments used may vary but often include a customised exercise plan, lifestyle coaching, nutritional guidance, behaviour modification, and monitoring.
Hydrotherapy
The buoyancy and resistance of moving in warm water are extremely therapeutic in treating sports injuries. Our small 60-minute group sessions are held at St Kilda Sea Baths.
Other Treatments
MPPFG also offer other treatments, including dietetics, orthotics, and our getback™ rehab program.
Your Sports Injury Questions Answered
There are many benefits to using Physiotherapy as a part of sports injury rehabilitation. It can help to reduce your injury time and speed up your recovery, prevent re-injury from occurring, improve your strength and mobility, guide your body on how to move without pain or discomfort, and improve your balance and coordination.
Absolutely! Children are incredibly active, whether they play sports or not, which makes them prime candidates for sustaining sports injuries. Our Physiotherapists are highly experienced in working with children and will be able to address their injuries in a calm and age-appropriate manner.
No, there is absolutely no need to obtain a referral prior to booking with one of our Physiotherapists for a sports injury. However, if you’re claiming treatment under the Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) program, you will need to first obtain a referral from your GP.
We understand that it can take time to get in to see a Physiotherapist. If you sustain an acute sports injury, it’s always good to start with the POLICE principle: Protect, Optimal Loading, Ice Compression, and Elevation.
